A Beautiful Place

“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.” ~ Kurt Vonnegut

This post is for you. It is meant to encourage and inspire you. I think you need it. This world is a tough place and you get discouraged sometimes. It’s a little overwhelming to be here. So today, just take a moment to think about the Goodness that is all around you. Think of the little kindnesses that you see during a day; someone holds the door for you, a smile is given, a mistake is forgiven. Now imagine the Good things you can give. What little happiness can you offer someone to lift their spirits? This is the way Goodness grows – you receive it and then you give it. Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that experiencing an act of goodness makes you more likely to commit one? It’s true.

If you listen to the rumble of the discontented and the clamor of the confused you will begin to think that this world is a hopeless mess, but I don’t believe that. We are simply focusing on the negative and so our story becomes one of despair. When a mighty forest fire rages through woodland areas it is terrifying and the scene it leaves is bleak – recovery seems almost impossible. The landscape is blistered, lifeless, and all seems lost. But the wisdom of the woodlands teaches us that forest fires serve a purpose. Some vegetation depends on fire to create the right conditions for germination, and certain animals thrive on the undergrowth that returns when the towering trees no longer block the sun. Things have a way of balancing out – we just have to have confidence in the process.

Goodness has been on the decline, it would seem, for some time. People have let their hearts grow cold. The pain has made them hate and the bitterness has stolen their sweetness. But you can be part of its return. You can change the story. You can make a difference in one life and that difference can spark a positive reaction in someone else. What has been ravaged can be restored – if we want it to be.

Take a second and consider these photos. Each one is a moment in time where one life is touching another with Goodness. In that moment, love and energy are being exchanged – hope is being offered, humanity is being restored. Let these pictures inspire you to do yourself a favor and do some Good. There is no better remedy for a discouraging day than to spread a little Goodness and take back a little lost ground! Look at the power we have to change our little world! Be encouraged.

“What has been ravaged can be restored – if we want it to be.” This idea, of it all being about choices, is all over my brain lately. It’s so true, and equally empowering. Thanks for this lovely post of encouragement.

Oh man…I’m swallowing a lump in my throat and there are tears running down my face right now….I recognize the quote from above and I posted it on my fb page recently for myself more than anyone else because I am having such a hard time with this right now. Thank you for the post and reminder. Someone once told me that I was really just a “creampuff” trying to look tuff. I hope to find and keep that creampuff interior.

Sooz, you have a way of reminding me what I used to know but have let it slip away.
    Thank you
