You are surrounded by it. It is in your schools, your libraries, your churches and your homes. It is in your theaters and on your television and radio. Propaganda is everywhere. Webster’s dictionary defines propaganda as: “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.” We have become a society so inundated with information intended to influence us in some way that it is difficult to discern the simple facts anymore.
Politicians lie and slander; companies promote products that they know are harmful; the media slants stories and promotes fear based journalism at epic rates. We are constantly bombarded with information that is meant to bias us in some way. We typically think of propaganda as negative, but I find it interesting that this is not always the case; in fact sometimes it can be quite helpful. Take, for instance, the story of “Keep Calm and Carry On.”
You have probably seen the now iconic poster that reads “Keep Calm and Carry On.” It has become an unforgettable 21st century image. Funny thing is – it was completely forgotten for some 50 years. It seems that this poster, along with two others, was produced in the days leading up to WWII. These posters were created to inspire confidence and reassure people during trying times. They were propaganda created for the good of Great Britain. Watch this charming little film about it…
Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution – Will Bring Us Victory!
Freedom is in Peril – Defend it with all your might!
Keep Calm and Carry On!
“It is hard to say exactly why such a phrase from a bygone decade would have such appeal and resonance now. Its design is considered simple and timeless and now commonly recognizable. However, it is perhaps the words on the poster which people find most enchanting. Like a voice out of history, it offers a very simple warmhearted message to inspire confidence in others during difficult times. And it is something that should never fade from fashion…to keep calm and carry on.”
Our current social tendency is to defend ourselves from the constant onslaught of negativity with full-metal emotional armor. We cut ourselves off from each other to self-protect at all cost. This will never work, never help, and never change the world around you for the good. Instead, choose to offer the Goodness of a positive message. Put your effort into good twigs for your nest and the nests of those around you. The root of the word propaganda is the same for propagate. Propagate goodness, it always works, always helps, and always changes the world around you for the good!
Wouldn’t it be nice to be surrounded by messages of encouragement and reassurance? Simple warmhearted messages to inspire. I think we need this now more than ever, and I don’t want to wait for another World War to bring it into fashion. What would you like to hear? What would be the positive propaganda you would want to see? Let’s begin to give each other what we need. Let’s reach out to each other with warmhearted messages of love and hope. Put some Positive Propaganda up in your home or office this week. Make a little poster of your own to inspire you and those around you. It’s what Goodness would do.
Put out some Positive Propaganda. It is Good for you and the people you love.
