Words have power. They shape the future. They create our reality. They define our world. Christian tradition says that God “spoke” the world into being. Now that’s a lot of word power. I love what Maya Angelou says, “Words are things. You must be careful, careful about calling people out of their names, using racial pejoratives and sexual pejoratives and all that ignorance. Don’t do that. Someday we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you.”
The older I get the more I appreciate this truth. What we say affects us. Words alone do not make us behave a certain way, but they do influence the way we think, and the way we think informs the way we behave. This first became real to me as a teenager. I was, like most teens, battling severe self-esteem issues and the suggestion was made to me to make a list of personal affirmations. I was to hang this list on the bathroom mirror and read them every day. This was before affirmations had become so popular and I had no idea what to expect, but with nothing to lose, I tried it. Day after day I read the list and little by little I began to see a change in the way I thought about myself. My sense of self-worth seemed to improve and I could feel an interior shift.
The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.” This is exactly what seemed to happen to me. Over time I felt more steady. I felt stronger. Science now supports the effectiveness of affirmations to “reset” our brains. They raise the level of “feel-good” hormones in the same way exercise does. They also, if used consistently, begin to retrain our brains forming clusters of “positive thought” neurons.
A friend recently recommended a list of personal affirmations collected by author and clinical psychologist, Dr. Carmen Harra. As I read the list I found many that resonated with me. As a gift of Goodness to yourself I want to encourage you to use this list as inspiration. Make your own list of affirmations that connect with your heart. Place them in a space that you use daily and focus on them consistently. Use this list to retrain your brain to focus on things that will enhance your daily life. Set your mind on Goodness and see the results!
